Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Floccari were on target to hand Coppa Italia holders Lazio a 2-0 win over Palermo and set up a quarter-final clash with Fiorentina, who prevailed in a five-goal thriller against Chievo.
Kolarov drove in from outside the box to give Lazio the lead against the run of play on the hour mark after the Serb had tried his luck with a series of long-distance efforts.
New arrival Floccari then ran on to a superbly weighted Mauro Zarate pass and produced a cool finish for his fourth goal in three games to ensure Lazio boss Davide Ballardini had cause for celebration after the clash with his former club.
But it made for a sour return to the Stadio Olimpico for Palermo coach Delio Rossi, who led Lazio to victory in this competition last season at the end of a four-year stint with the Rome side.
Fiorentina edged into the last eight earlier after being pushed all the way by Chievo in a pulsating contest at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
It took just seven minutes for the deadlock to be broken in an end-to-end encounter, with Pablo Granoche firing the visitors in front.
Adrian Mutu then levelled for Fiorentina on 35 minutes, only for Simone Bentivoglio to restore Chievo's lead three minutes later.
The hosts upped the tempo after the interval and equalised for a second time when 16-year-old Senegalese forward Khouma Babacar diverted in a low free-kick to level on 75 minutes.
Two minutes later Mutu bagged his second of the game, and the Romanian's effort proved to be decisive.
In the day's other match, Udinese shrugged off their poor Serie A form to progress with a 2-0 win over third tier Lumezzane, setting up a meeting with AC Milan later this month.
They had to wait to the stroke of half-time though to find an opener against the outfit from Lega Pro Prima Divisione as Francesco Lodi kept his nerve from the penalty spot.
Udinese doubled their advantage and finished the game as a contest after the break when Bernardo Corradi etched his name on the scoresheet.
