Inter edged out Livorno 1-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to reach the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.
A brilliant second-half free kick from Wesley Sneijder proved to be enough to give Jose Mourinho's side a narrow victory.
Dejan Stankovic and Sneijder struck the woodwork in the first half as the hosts dominated proceedings against the struggling Tuscans.
Inter, who had a slightly rotated line-up but still included some of the big hitters, made the breakthrough on the hour mark when Sneijder curled in a free-kick from the edge of the box.
The rest of the last 16 fixtures take place over three days in mid-January with the Nerazzurri facing the winners of the Juventus and Napoli tie in the last eight.
