Livorno's caretaker coach Gennaro Ruotolo could not hide his satisfaction after guiding the Tuscan club back to Serie A.
Assistant to former coach Leonardo Acori, Ruotolo was handed the top job before the final Serie B game of the the season but he has steered the Amaranto through the play-offs and into the top flight.
"Everyone associated with the club deserves this promotion," he said after the 5-2 aggregate victory over Brescia last night.
"We played a perfect match in an authoritarian manner, and the match went exactly the way we planned it out. The players were wonderful.
"Playing in a stadium full of people and enthusiasm, the promotion was important for the city and we are proud to have achieved this goal."
Favourites at the start of the season to snatch one of the automatic promotion spots, Livorno failed to catch champions Bari and runners-up Parma so had to settle for the play-off route.
And they had to battle hard in the play-off semi-finals after losing the first leg 2-0 to Grosseto, before overpowering their Tuscan rivals 4-1 in the return.
"We had always known that we could do the job, even after the defeat of Grosseto," concluded Ruotolo.
