[Coppa Italia] Reggina crush Cagliari

The pressure is growing on Cagliari after a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Reggina in the fourth round of the Coppa Italia, while Catania also knocked four past Padova and Empoli eliminated top-flight Siena.

Cagliari have been struggling in Serie A with back-to-back defeats and are now out of the Coppa in humiliating fashion.

Fabio Ceravolo and Franco Brienza each netted a brace in the 4-0 demolition job at the Stadio Granillo, as the Sardinians simply fell to pieces in the second half.


It piles more pressure on Cagliari boss Massimiliano Allegri, who must be feeling the heat already, but Reggina sweep through for a date with Udinese in the fifth round.

Catania also registered a 4-0 win against Serie C outfit Padova. Romanian international Nicolae Dica netted his first goal for the club at the Stadio Angelo Massimino.

Taka Morimoto got a rare appearance and made the most of it with two goals before Sabato's splendid volley.

The Sicilians will now play Juventus in the next round.

Serie B side Empoli secured an impressive 2-0 win at Serie A rivals Siena in the opening tie of the round.

The Tuscan derby had been in Serie A last season, but Empoli's relegation meant this is the only time they'll cross paths this term.

Francesco Lodi, who moved from Frosinone in the summer, took control of the match in the final 15 minutes. He converted a penalty for Del Grosso's red card offence on Ighli Vannucchi before making the result safe in stoppages with a fierce strike from the edge of the box.

Empoli now go through to the last 16, where they will face Sampdoria.

The remaining five ties in the fourth round – Bologna v Ascoli, Genoa v Ravenna, Lazio v Atalanta, Salernitana-Sassuolo, Torino v Livorno – will all be played in a fortnight's time.

The top eight Serie A seeds enter the competition in the next round.
