[WC2010] Pirlo deemed fit for duty

Italy's medical staff are confident Andrea Pirlo will shake off a knock, meaning Andrea Cossu is not needed.

The AC Milan midfielder has been struggling with a calf problem, giving the reigning world champions cause for concern.

Fears had been raised as to whether Pirlo would be able to play any part in the group stages of this summer's World Cup, seriously hampering Italy's chances.

However, the experienced playmaker is now expected to be back in action before the knockout rounds get underway, with positive progress being made in his recovery.

Team physicians have informed coach Marcello Lippi that Pirlo will be ready in time for a final Group F encounter against Slovakia on June 24.

While that news has come as a welcome relief to the player and his international colleagues, Cossu is unfortunately the odd man out.

The Cagliari midfielder had been called up by Lippi as a possible replacement, in case Pirlo took a turn for the worse.

However, he has been informed that he is no longer required and was put on a flight out of Johannesburg this evening.
