Italy held Paraguay to a 0-0 draw in their opening game at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.
Francesco Rocca's side started strongly at Cairo's International Stadium with Andrea Mazzarani hitting the post after just nine minutes from a free kick that beat goalkeeper Joel Silva.
Paraguay soon gained in confidence. Jorge Moriera missed two first-half chances, forcing saves from Vincenzo Fiorillo.
Sampdoria goalkeeper Fiorillo also stopped threatening solo runs from Federico Santander and Hernan Perez in the second half.
The Azzurrini will be the happier side with a point going into their second match against Trinidad & Tobago on Monday.
In Group A's other game, hosts Egypt beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in the tournament opener on Thursday night.
