[U20] Azzurrini squad for World Cup

Italy Under-20 coach Francesco Rocca has confirmed his 21-man squad for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.

FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009Rocca, who announced a preliminary list of 30 players last month, had to reduce his final squad selection by today's FIFA deadline.

The prestigious biennial "World Youth Championships" will be played in the North African country from 24 September to 16 October.

The squad features goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo, defenders Alessandro Crescenzi and Matteo Gentili and midfielder Mattia Mustacchio, with the quartet already involved in the Italy Under-21 set-up.

Michelangelo Albertazzi, Giacomo Bonaventura and Silvano Raggio Garibaldi are also included but, surprisingly, there is no place in the squad for Fernando Forestieri or Stefano Okaka Chuka.

The players will gather at the Borghesiana sports centre in Rome on Sunday evening to start preparations for the tournament before flying out to Egypt on Monday 21 September.

Italy will play their matches in the capital Cairo having been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Egypt, Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago.

The Azzurrini play their first game on Friday 25 September when Paraguay are the opponents at the Cairo International Stadium, where they will play all three of their group games.

The side will then play Trinidad & Tobago on Monday 28 September and wrap up the group stage when they face the hosts three days later.

Italy qualified for the tournament after reaching the final of the UEFA European Under-19 Championships in the Czech Republic last year.

There are six groups of four teams with the group winners and runners-up qualifying for the Round of 16. The best four third-placed sides will also reach the first knockout stage.

Egypt will meet Trinidad and Tobago in Alexandria in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday 24 September.
