[Coppa Italia] Third tier Novara shock Parma

Newly-promoted Serie A side Parma were shocked by Novara in the third round of the Coppa Italia as Livorno overcame Torino.

Parma 1-2 NovaraParma are preparing for life back in the top flight, but their preparations met with a setback after a 2-1 defeat by Novara at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

The third tier side took the lead just before half-time through Christian Bertani, only for Alessandro Lucarelli to equalise for the hosts 10 minutes into the second half.

Novara regained the lead just past the hour mark through Juliano Vicentini and Parma, who begin life in Serie A at Udinese next week, were unable to conjure up another equaliser to prevent an early exit.

Fellow new boys Livorno fared better as they advanced to the next stage after two goals in the final 20 minutes secured a 2-0 home success over recently-relegated Torino.

Cristian Raimondi broke the deadlock on 73 minutes at the Stadio Armando Picchi and Fedrico Dionisi made the game safe 10 minutes from time.

In the day's other tie, Serie B outfit Sassuolo were 2-0 winners over Lega Pro 1 giants Verona, with Emiliano Salvetti scoring after just two minutes before Luigi Riccio added a second before half-time.

The rest of the third round ties will take place over the course of the weekend.
