[Coppa Italia] Cagliari dumped out

Cagliari became the fourth Serie A victim in the third round of the Coppa Italia as they were dumped out by Triestina, but Sampdoria and Napoli easily progressed.

Triestina 1-0 CagliariTriestina played host to top-flight Cagliari at the Stadio Nereo Rocco and they celebrated a notable scalp following a 1-0 win.

Czech striker Jaroslav Sedivec grabbed the winning goal just nine minutes from time for Triestina, who finished just outside the play-off places in Serie B last season.

Sampdoria romped through with a 6-2 thumping of Lecce, who were relegated from Serie A last season.

Giampaolo Pazzini gave Samp an eighth-minute lead and the hosts had one foot in the next round when Antonio Cassano's 31st-minute strike was followed just a minute later by a second goal for Pazzini.

Cassano ensured he also bagged a brace as he secured Samp's progression on the hour mark.

Marino Defendi pulled one back for Lecce with 17 minutes left but just three minutes later, Angelo Palombo converted from the penalty spot to make it 5-1.

Lecce claimed another consolation goal as Stefano Lucchini put through his own goal after 81 minutes before Marco Padalino completed the scoring at the death.

Napoli also enjoyed a comfortable passage as they eased to a 3-0 win over Serie B side Salernitana in a local derby at the Stadio San Paolo.

Christian Maggio scored the opener on the half-hour mark before Ezequiel Lavezzi put the hosts firmly in charge two minutes before the break.

Jesus Datolo had a penalty saved by Ciro Polito midway through the second half but young Austrian striker Erwin Hoffer killed off any hope of a Salernitana comeback with his first goal for Napoli seven minutes from time.

The Tuscan derby between Siena and Grosseto will complete the third round on November 12. The tie had to be moved from its original date this weekend as it clashed with the famous Palio horse race.

The fourth round of the competition is scheduled for November 26 and December 1.
