The route to the 2009 UEFA Champions League final in Rome was made clear after the draw for the remainder of the competition was made in Switzerland today.
In an all-English quarter-final, Chelsea and Liverpool will renew their European rivalry after being drawn together for a fifth successive year in Europe's premier club competition. The last-four opposition for the winners will be two-time winners Barcelona or four-time champions Bayern Munich.
Holders Manchester United, aiming to become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League, will take on 2004 winners Porto with the winners playing the side that emerges from the tie involving Villarreal and Arsenal.
The quarter-final first legs will take place on 7/8 April, with the return matches on 14/15 April.
The semi finals will be played over two legs on 28/29 April and 5/6 May while the final will be held at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, Italy on Wednesday 27 May.
There are no Serie A clubs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Fiorentina failed to qualify from the group stages after finishing behind both the German and French champions Bayern Munich and Lyon respectively, while the trio of Inter, Juventus and Roma were all knocked out by English opponents Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal respectively in the previous round.
The 2002-03 Champions League final in Manchester then saw an all-Italian final between AC Milan and Juventus, while Inter also reached the last four. The 2010 final takes place in the Spanish capital of Madrid.
