UC Last 16: Viola prove too strong for Everton

Fiorentina took a big stride towards the UEFA Cup quarter-finals after two second-half strikes earned a 2-0 victory their superiority over Everton deserved.

Last 16, First Leg
Fiorentina produced a stunning display to earn a first leg advantage against Everton. The Viola dominated for long spells and went in front late on when Zdravko Kuzmanovic exquisitely side-footed home with 20 minutes remaining, firing in from the edge of the area after being teed up by Tomas Ujfalusi. Cesare Prandelli's side should have already been ahead, Christian Vieri twice denied superbly by Tim Howard, who also parried away efforts from Kuzmanovic and Giampaolo Pazzini. The hosts then doubled their lead when Riccardo Montolivo volleyed home after a slick passing move with Martin Jorgensen with nine minutes to go. Mario Alberto Santana could have added a third but their flourishing finish in Florence ensures Everton have a mountain to climb in the return leg in Liverpool next Wednesday.
