Serie B Week 33: Review

Saturday 29 March
Albinoleffe 0-2 Chievo
Chievo passed this major test of their promotion credentials by crushing surprise contenders Albinoleffe in their own back yard and go clear at the top of the table. Pellissier opened the scoring in the first minute by meeting Obinna’s assist and, after going close to an equaliser with Ruopolo, Leffe were finally downed by Bentivoglio.

Ascoli 2-2 Bologna
Bologna were stunned in stoppages and drop down off the leadership of Serie B. Bucchi took an early lead and was pegged back by Soncin, but on the stroke of half-time Marazzina gave the Rossoblu the boost they needed at the Stadio Del Duca. Bonetto saw red for a second bookable offence, setting up a tense finale. Bernacci wasted a golden opportunity from point-blank range, but made up for it in stoppages by snatching a 2-2 scoreline.

Grosseto 1-1 Lecce
Lecce only managed to scrape a point at little Grosseto and were fortunate to get that. Danilevicius broke through almost immediately and the visitors only snatched an equaliser thanks to Innocenti’s unlucky deflection. Even before Fabiano’s dismissal, the Tuscans had gone closer to a winner with Garofalo threatening an upset.

Brescia 1-0 Spezia
The Rondinelle had to reshuffle their squad and still managed to just about see off penultimate club Spezia. Only after Herzan’s red card did Brescia take advantage of the extra man to go in front with Taddei, but despite this situation were under pressure until the final whistle.

Modena 0-0 Pisa
Pisa missed another good opportunity to close up on the Serie B leaders. Juliano wasted a great chance and Pinardi was closed down by defenders, while Frezzolini needed a wonderful save to deny Castillo from point-blank range.

Piacenza 2-1 Rimini
Dedic continued his stunning season with a brace to down play-off hopefuls Rimini. His goals surrounded a temporary Docente equaliser and took his personal tally up to 11.

Cesena 1-1 Mantova
Mantova’s season isn’t getting any better. Spinale gave them a good start, but it took just seven minutes for Moscardelli to draw Cesena level. Cristante saw red before half-time, but the home side still couldn’t break down a dogged defence. It’s a point that does little to boost either side.

Bari 2-0 Triestina
Jadid’s header just five minutes in proved enough to secure all three points for the Southerners, with Desideri’s late strike sealing the deal. In between the two goals Triestina had poured on the pressure, but were unable to break down the San Nicola outfit.

Frosinone 1-0 Treviso
Frosinone needed a moment of magic to break through an uninspired Treviso and it came from Eder, consolidating their comfortable mid-table status. It’s closer than ever to relegation for the visitors, though.

Ravenna 0-1 Avellino
Avellino gave themselves a massive boost with this relegation six-pointer against the bottom of the table club. It all happened in the space of 60 seconds, as Porcari’s dismissal was followed by the Nardini decider.

Vicenza 3-1 Messina
Zampagna inspired Vicenza to an important win that lifts them away from the drop zone, but Messina are in freefall. Cordova had given the Sicilians the lead with one of his trademark power finishes, but Zampagna turned it all around. Messina shot themselves in the foot with Biancolino and Rea seeing red and Manitta kept the scoreline down by saving a Capone penalty, but Matteini completed the rout in stoppages.
