In a turbulent 24 hours at Cagliari, the club have convinced Nedo Sonetti to continue as coach after Marco Giampaolo, who has twice been in charge at the Sardinian outfit, refused to take the reins once again.
The 66-year-old Sonetti stepped down yesterday – just a month after replacing Giampaolo – following a dismal run of results which have left Cagliari bottom of Serie A.
President Massimo Cellino tried to reappoint Giampaolo, who had been dismissed in December 2006 and then reappointed in February, as he remains tied to the Rossoblu until the summer of 2010.
However, the 40-year-old said he was unwilling to return and has asked Cagliari to cancel his contract: "I have my dignity and my pride and they are priceless."
The club's board met with Sonetti today and persuaded him to retract his resignation.
