CL Matchday 6: Wednesday Review

Julio Cruz scored the only goal as Inter ended their group stage with a victory in the Netherlands, while Amantino Mancini earned Roma a draw with Manchester United.

GROUP G: PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Inter / Fenerbahce 3-1 CSKA Moscow
Inter had already secured top spot in Group G and a place in the last 16, but the victory in the final game means PSV Eindhoven have to content themselves with only a place in the UEFA Cup.

The Dutch champions needed to beat the Nerazzurri while hoping that Fenerbahce dropped points at home to CSKA Moscow in order to survive in the Champions League – but neither result went their way.

The dismissal of midfielder Edison Mendez just before the half-hour hinted that it was not going to be PSV's night, and a Cruz goal in the 64th minute confirmed the suspicion as Inter deservedly finished on a high.

Fenerbahce got through to the knock-out stages after recovering from a goal down to secure all three points. Edu's own goal gave the Russian visitors the lead but the home side swiftly levelled through Alex. Ugur Boral's brace late in each half confirmed the Turkish side's progress into the next round.

GROUP F: Roma 1-1 Manchester United / Sporting Lisbon 3-0 Dynamo Kiev
Roma and Manchester United ended the Champions League group stage with an honourable draw as Mancini struck with 20 minutes remaining to cancel out Gerard Pique's first-half header.

With the positions of all four teams in Group F already secured on Matchday 5, there were plenty of changes to the starting line-ups on the final matchday.

It was Pique's second goal in as many games in Europe's elite club competition and he was hoping it would help his team to their sixth consecutive success. However, Mancini's strike was true and a fair reflection of an entertaining, open match in Rome.

Sporting Lisbon will go into the UEFA Cup in good spirits after ending their campaign with their first home win this season against a spirited Dynamo Kiev. Goals from Anderson Polga, captain Joao Moutinho and Liedson meant the Lisbon club matched their highest points tally in the competition and inflicted a sixth successive defeat on the Ukrainian visitors, already guaranteed to finish bottom of the section. Dynamo therefore become only the eighth club to finish a group stage of the Champions League without a single point.
