Cagliari secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sampdoria in the first leg of the fourth round of the Coppa Italia.Substitute Alessandro Matri netted the only goal with only 15 minutes remaining on the clock to give the Sardinians a priceless first leg lead.
The winner will face either holders Roma or Torino in the quarter-finals.
Empoli beat Juventus 2-1 last week and Fiorentina were held to a 1-1 draw at Ascoli on Tuesday in the only other first leg matches.
The rest of the fourth round matches will be completed next week, with the return legs scheduled for mid-January.
