Italy’s candidacy to host Euro 2012 entered another stage today as a UEFA delegation team arrived in the country to visit the proposed venues.
The peninsula is among the front-runners in the race to stage the European Championships and the six inspectors arrived in Rome this morning to see the eight cities where the games would be played. They will examine the stadium infrastructure, training grounds, travel arrangements and hotel facilities.
A visit to the Saxa Rubra headquarters of Italian state broadcaster RAI, is scheduled in the afternoon while in the evening, the delegation will enjoy a welcome dinner at Campidoglio with Mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni.
Then on Monday the proposals will be laid out in a meeting that’ll include Azzurri coach Roberto Donadoni and assistant coach to the Under-21’s team Gianfranco Zola, who is also an ambassador for UNICEF. Also in attendance at the Italian Olympic Committee hall will be all of the national authorities that support the bid as well as Italian Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri and CONI President Giovanni Petrucci.
UEFA’s delegation will examine the stadium infrastructure, training grounds, travel arrangements and hotel facilities in the eight cities that are penciled down to host the tournament matches. The bid plans to host matches in Bari, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Turin and Udine. Four other cities have been named as possible substitutes - Bologna, Cagliari, Genoa and Verona.
The delegation that has just visited Poland and Ukraine’s joint bid, consists of Giorgio Marchetti (Director of Professional Football), Mikael Selzer (Head of National Team Competitions), Christoph Jung (EURO Competition Manager), Jurgen Muller (Head of Event management/EURO 2008 SA), Horst Schmidt (Advisor National Teams Committee), and Sabine Fux (Accommodation Manager).
The third candidate in the running to host the tournament is also a joint bid from Croatia and Hungary. A final selection of the host country will be made at UEFA headquarters on December 8.
