Euro 2012 Visit: Day 1

The first official visit was conducted at the Saxa Rubra production centre of Italian state broadcaster RAI. The UEFA team were presented with the projects on the new facilities that will be built for the international media organisations.

In the evening, the members of the UEFA committee were dinner guests of Mayor Walter Veltroni who welcomed them on behalf of the city of Rome at the city hall. The dinner was also attended by the four FIGC Deputy Commissioners, Demetrio Albertini, Massimo Coccia, Vito Gamberale and Paolo Nicoletti as well as the Federation's Director General, Virginia Filippi.

In welcoming the guests, Veltroni highlighted some aspects of the great passion that Italians have for football, without forgetting the suggestive backdrop that Rome and Italy can offer. "Our country is crazy about football, just as in the healthy passion shown for the recent World Cup victory. If the 2012 European Championship is held in Italy, you will discover an incredible passion."

The Mayor then dwelled on Rome’s sporting tradition. "It’s a city immersed in sports. It can offer modern and avant-garde facilities such as the Auditorium, or evocative theatres such as Circo Massimo. Moreover, Rome has proven over the years to be able to guarantee top security standards.”
