Serie B Play-offs: Brescia edge Cittadella

Brescia grabbed a late 1-0 victory away to Cittadella, taking a huge step towards the promotion play-off final.

The Rondinelle had hoped to already be in Serie A by now, but a final round defeat saw them leapfrogged by Cesena and forced into the play-offs.

Cittadella got off to an aggressive start in the first leg of the semi-finals and went close with Bellazzini, while at the other end Caracciolo’s volley from the edge of the box skimmed the woodwork and a deflected Budel effort was smothered.

Possanzini also fired over the bar for the visitors, who slowly began to take more control of the match.

Iunco drilled wide from distance and Kozak just failed to get on the end of Rispoli’s cross.

The tie looked to be heading for a stalemate, but at the 88th minute Brescia broke the deadlock with a potentially decisive away goal. Baiocco curled in a free kick for Mareco’s towering header to silence the Cittadella crowd.

Considering Brescia finished higher up the standings, the only way Cittadella can reach the play-off final now is to win by two clear goals at the Rigamonti.

The second leg of this semi-final is on Sunday, kick-off 1730 UK time.
