[Primavera] Inter, Juve & Roma crash out

Three of the favourites, Inter, Juventus and Roma have been dumped out of the running for the 2009-10 Campionato Primavera title at the first qualifying stage.

The trio were knocked out in the last 16 despite having the advantage of overturning each of their first-leg deficits on home soil in the return matches on Thursday. But all three could only manage 1-1 draws, with Empoli going through 2-1 on aggregate against Inter, Brescia beating Viareggio tournament winners Juve 4-3, and Chievo crushing Roma 3-1.

Defending champions Palermo, Coppa Italia winners AC Milan and Supercoppa Italiana victors Genoa are amongst those who have safely navigated themselves into the Final Eight mini-tournament, which will this year take place in the province of Macerata from 1 to 8 June.

Sampdoria, champions in 2008, and Lazio complete the line up for the final phase of the prestigious Under-20 competition.

The Final Eight of the competition - which consists of the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the grand final - will be decided by single matches and played in neutral venues. The winning team will be presented with the "Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti" at Macerata's Stadio Comunale Helvia Recina on Tuesday 8 June.

The draw for the final phase of the tournament was made on Wednesday 19 May.
