[Primavera] Milan win Coppa Italia

AC Milan have won the Primavera Coppa Italia after beating Palermo 3-1 on aggregate in the final.

A 1-1 draw in the first leg a fortnight ago left Wednesday night's return at the San Siro nicely poised, but after edging ahead early on, it was Milan who took control of the contest to lift only their second Coppa Italia.

The star of the night for the young Rossoneri was Simone Verdi. The 17-year-old opened the scoring with a stunning strike from outside of the area after just four minutes before setting up Gianmarco Zigoni on the hour mark to secure victory.

Simone VerdiGiovanni Stroppa's men had opened the scoring in the first leg of the final too on April 1 thanks to a fine solo effort from the 18-year-old Zigoni, before Marco Giovio levelled for the Sicilians.

Palermo then saw a penalty from Jerry Mbakogu saved by Milan's substitute goalkeeper Filippo Perucchini, who had to come on after the dismissal of Antonio Donnarumma, but Rosario Pergolizzi's side failed to take advantage of the numerical superiority in the remaining 20 minutes at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

The Coppa success is the first piece of silverware for Milan at this Under-20 level since they last triumphed in the cup in 1985. Their wait for the Primavera league championship has been even longer, ever since their sole title in 1965.

The focus will now be turning back on to the Campionato Primavera, where both sides are on the verge of qualifying for the last 16 phase in May - on the road to June's Final Eight stage in Macerata.

Palermo are aiming to defend the title they won last year while Milan hope to complete an historic league and cup double.
