Sinisa Mihajlovic has stepped down as Catania coach amid reports linking him with Inter.
Jose Mourinho is expected to leave Inter over the next few days and take charge of Real Madrid.
Inter would then have to replace the Portuguese tactician and Mihajlovic had already emerged as a possible candidate before his decision to quit Catania.
Mihajlovic has earned rave reviews for his work with Catania after guiding the club to a respectable 13-placed finish in Serie A.
The Serbian, who spent time at Inter during his playing career and as an assistant to former coach Roberto Mancini, is now keen to embark on a new challenge, with Fiorentina and Sampdoria also possible destinations.
"I hope to soon find a job which legitimises my decision and my professional ambitions," he said on Catania's official website, apologising several times for the distress he has caused the club.
