Reja replaces Ballardini at Lazio

Lazio have confirmed the appointment of former Napoli boss Edy Reja following the sacking of Davide Ballardini.

Ballardini, who joined last summer from Palermo and began well with victory against Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana, had been under immense pressure following last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Catania that dropped Lazio into the Serie A relegation zone.

Reja confirmed he was ready to leave Croatian side Hajduk Spit to take charge of Lazio and he will be given the task of saving them from relegation.

A statement from the club read: "SS Lazio announces that it has sacked coach Davide Ballardini and his staff.

"Coach Edoardo Reja has taken over the team."

The announcement comes just 24 hours after fans interrupted training at Formello to protest against club President Claudio Lotito.

Reja, who is set to pen a contract with Biancocelesti until June 2011, will take charge of the side for the first time against Parma this weekend.
