Italy confirm World Cup base

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed Italy's World Cup training base in South Africa will be the same facility they used during last year's FIFA Confederations Cup.

The world champions will train at Southdowns College in Irene, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, for the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 11 July.

Italy won a battle with the USA team to use Southdowns but will this time stay at the nearby Leriba Lodge hotel in Centurion rather than the Irene Country Lodge which has been booked by the Americans.

The Azzurri failed to get out of the group stages at the 2009 Confederations Cup competition, picking up a win against USA but losing to both Egypt and Brazil.

Marcello Lippi's men will open the defence of their world title in Group F against Paraguay in Cape Town on 14 June, then play New Zealand in Nelspruit on 20 June and Slovakia in Johannesburg four days later.
