Roma have been drawn against either Naftan Novopolotsk of Belarus or Gent of Belgium in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
Naftan have a 2-1 advantage over Gent going into next Thursday's second qualifying round second leg tie away from home.
Roma, seeded in Group 1 for the draw, qualified for the competition, which replaces the UEFA Cup, by finishing a disappointing sixth in last season's Serie A.
The Giallorossi will travel away for the first leg on Thursday 30 July, with the home leg in Rome on Thursday 6 August.
Naftan qualified for the inaugural Europa League tournament by winning the Belarusian Cup for the first time in their history last season, while Gent reached this stage by finishing fourth in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
The winners of the 35 third qualifying round encounters will go into the draw for the play-off round on 7 August, with ties on 20 and 27 August. That final qualifying stage will include losing teams from the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, plus domestic cup winners and other teams from Europe's strongest football nations, including Italy's other two Europa League entrants, Genoa and Lazio.
The winners of the play-off round will then reach the group stage, which will see 48 teams play in 12 four-team groups between September and December before a knockout stage begins next February featuring additional teams from the Champions League group stage.
The final is scheduled to be played in Hamburg on Wednesday 12 May, 2010.
