[Mercato] Milan snap up Onyewu

AC Milan have announced the signing of American defender Oguchi Onyewu as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Standard de Liege.

Oguchi OnyewuThe USA international, who has represented his country on 46 occasions, has penned a three-year contract with the Rossoneri.

"AC Milan announces the signing on a permanent deal of defender Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liege," read a statement from the club.


"The player has signed a contract with AC Milan through 30 June 2012."

The 27-year-old made a big contribution in Belgium with Standard Liege winning the Jupiler Pro League title last season.

Onyewu, who played on loan at English side Newcastle United in the 2007-08 campaign and formerly of French outfit Metz, is Milan's first summer signing.

The Washington-born centre-back impressed during the recent FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa helping the USA reach the final and Milan have decided to bring him in to bolster their defensive options.
