A valiant Udinese are out of the UEFA Cup after Werder Bremen thwarted a stunning recovery to secure a 3-3 draw in their quarter-final second leg tie in Udine to win 6-4 on aggregate.
UDINESE 3-3 WERDER BREMEN (Agg: 4-6)
Two goals by Diego and a Claudio Pizarro strike guided Werder Bremen through to the UEFA Cup semi-finals after Udinese had wiped out their 3-1 first-leg deficit before half-time at the Stadio Friuli. Despite Diego cancelling out Gokhan Inler's stunning 15th-minute strike, the momentum was with Udinese at the break as Fabio Quagiarella struck twice. But Diego's second of the match, on the hour mark, swung the tie back in favour of the Bundesliga side, who added to their tally through Pizarro on 73 minutes moments after Diego had missed a penalty for his hat-trick. The visitors now have an German semi-final meeting with Hamburg next month, while the other semi-final is an all-Ukrainian affair with Dynamo Kiev playing Shakhtar Donetsk.
