Italy will have no representatives in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals as a much improved Inter were beaten 2-0 at Manchester United and an unlucky Roma were knocked out after a penalty shoot-out in Rome.
MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 INTER (Agg: 2-0)
Manchester United progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals after early headed goals in each half from Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo earned them a 2-0 victory over Inter. The champions of England, Europe and the World remain on course for an unprecendented quintuple of trophies this term after surviving an uncomfortable encounter with the Serie A champions, who could easily have scored at least one goal and earned a score draw they needed. Jose Mourinho arrived with a reputation for getting results against United – most famously with Porto five years ago – but his side certainly ensured a nervy night for their hosts as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dejan Stankovic and Adriano all missed great chances.
ROMA 1-0 ARSENAL (AET, Agg: 1-1, Pens: 6-7)
Roma's dream of reaching the Champions League final ended as Arsenal squeezed through to the quarter-finals after an epic penalty shoot-out win at the Stadio Olimpico. It took only nine minutes for Luciano Spalletti's Roma from defender Juan to level the aggregate scores, yet almost two hours later – despite numerous chances for the Giallorossi and a storng penalty appeal turned down – there was still nothing to choose between the sides as first extra-time and then spot-kicks ensued. Both goalkeepers made saves in the shoot-out, from Mirko Vucinic and Eduardo da Silva respectively, before Max Tonetto's decisive miss. Tonetto blazed Roma's eighth effort over as the Giallorossi's dream of playing the final at their home stadium, as they had done in 1984, died.
