Bologna have replaced coach Daniele Arrigoni with former Serbia defender Sinisa Mihajlovic after Sunday's 5-1 defeat at Cagliari left the newly-promoted side second from bottom in Serie A.
Mihajlovic has signed a contract until the end of the season, taking over from Arrigoni, 49, who led the club to promotion last term but had been unable to prevent Bologna sliding to within a point of bottom side Reggina.
After their surprise win at AC Milan on the opening day of the campaign, the Felsinei have lost eight of their following nine league games, with their only other victory coming against Lazio.
For the 39-year-old Mihajlovic, the Bologna job is a first head coaching role. The former Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter player had assisted coach Roberto Mancini at the Nerazzurri last season.
He will be at the helm on Saturday when Bologna host another struggling Roma at the Stadio Dall'Ara.
