[Azzurri] Curci replaces Amelia

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has called up Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci after Marco Amelia pulled out of this week's World Cup qualifiers.

Gianluca CurciPalermo shot-stopper Amelia sustained a back injury during yesterday's training session and was sent home today.

But this evening Lippi has decided to call in a replacement in the form of Curci.

"I am very happy to be back in the Nazionale," said the former Roma and Under-21 international.

"To be the first Siena player ever in the senior Italy squad fills me with pride, as the city and this club deserve it."

The 23-year-old has received seven calls for the Azzurri, the most recent in November 2007, but is yet to earn a cap.

In today's session in Coverciano Lippi tested out a new four-man defence with Alessandro Gamberini and Fabio Cannavaro flanked by Marco Cassetti and Andrea Dossena.

Nicola Legrottaglie and Alberto Aquilani are back in full training after fitness concerns, but are not expected to be in the starting XI against Cyprus in Larnaca on Saturday.

The 2010 World Cup qualifiers continue when Italy welcome Georgia to Udine next Wednesday.
