Italian football is in mourning after Sampdoria and Treviso midfielder Gionata Mingozzi was tragically killed in a car crash earlier this morning.
The talented 23-year-old was involved in a head-on collision between his Porsche and a lorry near Venice.
The crash took place at around 8am as the Ravenna native was on his way to undergo a medical ahead of pre-season training.
"It is with the deepest sorrow that we will mourn with his family, friends and all who have had the privilege of knowing him during his tragically short life," a statement read on Treviso's website.
Mingozzi was co-owned by Sampdoria and made his Serie A debut with the Blucerchiati in 2006 before spending the last two years with Lecce and Treviso in Serie B.
A statement from the Genoa club read: "The President Riccardo Garrone, the board, the staff and the squad express their deepest condolences to the Mingozzi family for the tragic death of Gionata."
