Cittadella and Ancona have been promoted to Serie B after triumphing in the Serie C1 play-off Finals.
It was a heartbreaking afternoon for Cremonese fans, who saw the expectant Grigiorossi lose 3-1 at their Stadio Zini to undo their 1-0 first-leg advantage over Cittadella.
Emiliano Mondonico’s side led Serie C1A for much of the season, but finished second to Sassuolo and had a bitter end to their campaign.
To add insult to injury, the Cremona outfit saw a goal disallowed for a dubious offside in the final minute, which would have been enough to send them into the Second Division.
In Serie C1B, Ancona beat Taranto 2-1 to book their return to the second tier.
The first leg had been a tense stalemate, but the more experienced side won through and sparked a promotion party at the Stadio del Conero.
Meanwhile, Lumezzane, Portosummaga and Real Marcianise won their Serie C2 play-off Finals to win promotion into C1 for next season.
