Serie B Play-off Final: First Leg Review

Lecce have a commanding lead in the promotion play-off Final after Elvis Abbruscato grabbed a 1-0 win away to Albinoleffe.

It is a bitter blow for the Bergamo minnows who commanded Serie B for much of the season, but their late dip in form proved decisive.

The first half started strongly for Leffe, who threatened an opener with Marco Cellini’s header from a Marco Gori cross and Francesco Benussi’s impressive save to deny Filippo Carobbio’s free kick.

Cellini went close again as his header skimmed the frame of the post, Lecce only pushing the defence with Andrea Zanchetta and Viktor Boudianski from distance.

After the break Francesco Ruopolo and Carobbio continued to terrorise the Salentini back line, but the strongest defence in Serie B clammed up to keep themselves on level terms.

It proved an inspired tactic, as they took the lead against the run of play with 15 minutes left on the clock at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia.

Abbruscato got on the end of Simone Tiribocchi’s assist to tap in a goal that tastes like a ticket to the top flight.

One of these two sides will be in Serie A next season and the deciding encounter is on Sunday evening at the Stadio Via del Mare.

Lecce qualified for this Final by beating Pisa 3-1 on aggregate, including a 1-0 away win, while Albinoleffe upset the odds to eliminate Brescia 3-1.

In that semi-final home advantage was key for Leffe, who overturned a 1-0 first leg defeat.
