Toro to honour Superga victims

Torino boss Gianni De Biasi has asked his players to put in a special performance against Napoli to honour the 59th anniversary of the Superga air disaster.

On May 4, 1949 the plane carrying the "Grande Torino" side crashed into the Superga mountain outside Turin, killing all 31 aboard and wiping out a golden generation of Italian football.

They were returning from a friendly game against Benfica in Lisbon and every year a ceremony is held at the chapel where the plane went down.

This year in a special dispensation for the fact Torino must play Napoli on Sunday, the ceremony is to be held today (May 3) at 1700 local time, the same hour as the crash.

"We will try to honour their memory with a performance worthy of the Toro jersey," said De Biasi.

The entire squad and thousands of fans flock to Superga for the memorial every year and this will be no different.

"Now it is time for facts and not words," added goalkeeper Matteo Sereni, who has recovered from an injury and should face Napoli.

"Now more than ever, on a date like May 4, we must prove that we are worthy of this shirt."
