Ghirardi explains Cuper sack

Parma President Tommaso Ghirardi has defended his decision to axe coach Hector Cuper with just one game remaining.

The Argentine tactician replaced Domenico Di Carlo at the helm, but was himself shown the exit after only 10 matches in charge.

The Crociati have come in for some heavy criticism after sacking Cuper and need to beat Inter in their final game to have any chance of staying in Serie A for another season.

Many have questioned both the timing of the decision and the ex-Inter boss’ original hiring, but Ghirardi is sure he has made the right choice.

"I made my decision for the good of the team. I was appalled by certain reports from people who think that this move was designed to help Inter," said the Ducali chief.

"I would like to know whether these people are aware of what it means to go down in terms of image and economics. I spoke to Hector and he understood my motives, even if he is obviously disappointed."

Parma made a dramatic recovery under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri last term, with the Gialloblu’s Primavera boss Andrea Manzo taking the step up to try and equal that achievement on Sunday.

"We achieved a near miracle last year and we can do the same this time. The only people who can save Parma are the players. It seems like I have taken away an alibi and stopped them thinking about everything that happened when Cuper was at Inter," concluded Ghirardi.
