Catania survive, Empoli and Parma in B

A late strike from Jorge Martinez helped Catania pick up the point they needed to secure survival in Serie A and send Empoli down to Serie B. Parma will join them in the Second Division following their defeat against Inter.

Catania went into their final game of the season against title-chasing Roma knowing a draw would secure their top flight status for another season, but fell behind early on through Mirko Vucinic.

With Empoli winning 2-1 against relegated Tuscan rivals Livorno, the Sicilians scored the crucial equaliser through Martinez with only nine minutes remaining on the clock. The draw lifted Walter Zenga's side above Empoli and the relegation zone on the head-to-head record.

Parma, who had to win to have any chance of staying up, lost 2-0 at home to Inter courtesy of a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That result secured the Nerazzurri the Scudetto while, Parma go down into Serie B for the first time in 18 years.
