AC Milan's dreadful run at home continued when they lost 2-1 to Catania in an Coppa Italia last 16 first-leg match.
The European champions, who beat Boca Juniors 4-2 on Sunday to win the Club World Cup, returned to domestic action on a high but the loss means they have failed to win against Italian opposition at the San Siro this season.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti fielded a weakened side with one eye on Sunday's Serie A derby with Inter but paid the price.
Gionatha Spinesi and Giuseppe Mascara netted first half goals for Catania with Milan reserve striker Alberto Paloschi scoring after the break. Catania had Gennaro Sardo sent off with 15 minutes remaining, but held on to take a one-goal advantage into the second leg in Sicily.
The rest of the last 16 first legs were spread across December with Inter winning 4-1 at Reggina on Wednesday and holder Roma losing 3-1 at Torino.
The second legs are scheduled for January 16.
