Cagliari have decided to reappoint Marco Giampaolo as coach for a third time after Nedo Sonetti stepped down just a month after replacing him. But Giampaolo has rejected the opportunity to return.
The 40-year-old was sacked in December 2006 and then reappointed in February, helping Cagliari to avoid relegation.
He was released again in November by club President Massimo Cellino, with Sonetti taking the reins.
Under the 66-year-old, however, the islanders collected just a point from five Serie A games and now prop up the Serie A table following their 2-0 defeat to Inter on Sunday night.
But this evening Giampaolo has underlined that he has no intention of starting a third stint with the Sardinians.
"Although I’m well aware that I will lose out financially, I have turned down a return," he told the media. "My honour and dignity are priceless."
Reports now suggest that Sonetti could perform a U-turn and continue in the role, if he is given assurances that he will have money to spend in the New Year.
