UC Group Stage: Matchday 2 Review

Fiorentina's purple patch continues after they demolished Swedish outfit Elfsborg 6-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Fiorentina 6-1 Elfsborg
Group C, Matchday 2

Fiorentina had far too much for Elfsborg as they cruised to a 6-1 success on home soil. Indeed, they needed just four minutes to take the lead as Martin Jorgensen struck with a fine effort from the edge of the box. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo did the hard work for Viola's second a minute later, as he set up Christian Vieri to double their tally.

Stefan Ishizaki gave Elfsborg hope when he netted just before half-time but after the break Fiorentina went for the jugular.

Marco Donadel scored the game's best goal from distance just past the hour-mark. Minutes later, in the 65th, it was four as Per Kroldrup etched his name on the scoresheet, before Jorgensen with his second and youngster Samuel Di Carmine late on put the gloss on a polished display.

Fiorentina, who remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, stay top of Group C on 4 points following their 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Matchday 1. La Viola could secure qualification when the travel to AEK Athens on 29 November.

Mlada Boleslav 1-2 Villarreal
Group C, Matchday 2

Villarreal were more comfortable than the scoreline suggests as they ground out a 2-1 win against Mlada Boleslav.

The Spanish side took a 33rd minute lead when Turkish striker Nihat Kahveci drilled home from Matias Fernandez's cross. Villarreal then contrived to miss several more chances, before ten minutes after the interval, Santi Cazorla made sure of the points from just inside the box.

Mlada Boleslav showed spirit and enterprise as they looked to get back into the contest and were rewarded, albeit in vain, when in the final minute Mendy struck.
