Serie C Week 3: Verona get to the point

Newly-relegated Verona had to settle for a first Serie C point as fellow fallen giants Venezia and Cremonese were also held in a weekend of draws.

The long-suffering Veronese faithful saw their side lose their first two third tier games and there was already pressure on boss Franco Colomba before their clash with struggling Lombardy outfit Pro Sesto.

There was a collective groan in the Stadio Bentegodi as French youngster Robert Maah put the visitors ahead with an accurate strike after a defensive lapse.

With the Mastini headed for another defeat, Colomba gave a ferocious team-talk at the break and the momentum of the game changed.

The Scaligeri poured forwards, but needed a wonder goal from Brazilian star William Da Silva, who found the top corner from nearly 30 yards to grab a point.

Fellow Serie B outcasts Arezzo suffered a crushing 4-2 defeat at the hands of Salernitana and are also yet to find their feet in their new habitat.

Crotone were edged out 2-1 by Perugia – a side in Serie A as recently as 2002 – and Pescara’s stuttering start continued with a 1-1 draw against Sangiovannese – who list ex-Fiorentina and Derby County man Francesco Baiano amongst their ranks.

Cremonese are the team to beat in Serie C, but they had to settle for a share of the points with Cavese at the Stadio Simonetta Lamberti.

Emiliano Mondonico’s side remain unbeaten thanks to a goal from star striker Gabriele Graziani, but were denied maximum points by a Gaetano Grieco free-kick.

Venezia were unable to get the better of high-flying Cittadella as Marco Veronese’s second goal in as many weeks was cancelled out by a Claudio Coralli penalty.

Surprisingly, the two teams left with 100 per cent records in the Third Division are Emilia-Romagna mainstays Sassuolo and newly-promoted Basilicata minnows Potenza.
