Scotland have piled more pressure on Italy by winning 3-1 against Lithuania and leapfrogging them in second place.
Kris Boyd, Stephen McManus and James McFadden secured the victory, although ex-Livorno forward Tomas Danilevicius converted a penalty for Lithuania.
Euro 2008 qualifying Group B remains extremely tight, as this afternoon’s result at Hampden Park put Scotland on 18 points level with France after eight games played.
Les Bleus and Italy – who are on 16 points – have only had seven matches so far and play each other this evening at the San Siro.
Ukraine's chances were hit hard by a 1-1 draw in Georgia today. Oleh Shelayev had given them an early lead, but in the last minute Tatanshvilli secured a point for the home side.
Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine face the Azzurri next Wednesday in Kiev, while France go head to head with Scotland.
Italy have just five games left to stake their claim on a place in Euro 2008, facing Georgia at home on October 13, Scotland away on November 17 and the Faroe Islands at home on November 21.
