Avellino and Pisa have won the Serie C1 play-off finals and confirm their return to Serie B next season. For the Tuscans it’s their first foray into Cadetti for 13 years.Four teams placed from 2nd down to 5th in each of Serie C1/A, C1/B, C2/A, C2/B and C2/C entered the end of season play-off tournament.
While Serie C1 winners Grosseto and Ravenna were promoted automatically, the other two contenders in C1 had to go through the play-off process. Those concluded on Sunday with Pisa defeating Monza 2-0 at the Arena Garibaldi, overturning the 1-0 loss from the first leg.
The club had not tasted Serie B football since 1993-94, when they lost the play-out to Acireale and were then declared bankrupt.
The side had to begin again from the Eccellenza amateur League – a terrible blow for a team that had been regularly in the top flight during the 1980s.
Pisa fought their way back and this season finally found the right ticket to Serie B by eliminating Venezia and Monza in the play-offs.
Avellino are more familiar to Serie B followers, having only been relegated a year ago. They continue to be the yo-yo side, as they have changed division for the last five years running.
The Irpini had also lost the first leg of their play-off 1-0, but a crunching 3-0 victory over Foggia at the Stadio Partenio in extra time returned them to the second rung of the calcio ladder.
There were also promoton play-off finals in Serie C2 where six clubs were fighting it out for a place in the third tier of Italian football.
Serie C1/A:
Grosseto (62 points) secured automatic promotion to Serie B. Sassuolo (61), Pisa (58), Venezia (54) and Monza (54) entered the play-off tournament for the final spot in the Cadetti.
