Euro 2008 Qual: Azzurri scrape to win

Faroe Islands 1-2 Italy [Torshavn]
Filippo Inzaghi struck twice as Italy narrowly beat Group B minnows the Faroe Islands in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier in Torshavn.

The Milan forward found the net in the 12th minute before grabbing his second shortly after the re-start. The Azzurri, who needed a victory to get back in touch with leaders France, were clearly superior on the pitch against a side that remain winless in qualifying.

However, the world champions squandered many chances and were made to sweat after Rogvi Jacobsen reduced the deficit with 13 minutes left to play.

Lithuania beat Georgia 1-0 earlier today, but as France saw off Ukraine 2-0 in Paris, Italy leap into second place in Group B on 13 points behind Les Bleus on 15.

The Faroe Islands are yet to win a point in Group B but will take heart from their performance as they prepare to play Scotland at home on Wednesday, while the Azzurri travel to Lithuania on the same day.
