Berlusconi hails Italian triumph

President Silvio Berlusconi says this win was "for Milan and Italy." He also pledged summer reinforcements for the newly crowned Champions of Europe.

"I told Inzaghi he would score two goals and I was right. It is particularly wonderful to win tonight, as we have gone some way to wiping away the pain of Istanbul, which was still weighing heavily on us."

That penalty shoot-out defeat was a nightmare for President Berlusconi, as his team had been leading 3-0 before conceding three goals in six minutes. "In 2005 it was a more entertaining game certainly, but this Final was bound to be tense and you have to focus on results as well as quality."

There were three English semi-finalists this season, but it was a Serie A club that took the silverware less than a year after Italy won the World Cup. "Milan have won tonight for the club and for Italy. This is a great achievement," added the club patron.

Berlusconi has repeatedly hinted at bringing in big names next season, including Andriy Shevchenko and Ronaldinho. "
Milan have every intention of strengthening their squad in the summer with signings up to the standard of the club."

Newspaper reports continue to insist another prime target is Juventus star Gianluigi Buffon after Nelson Dida’s disappointing campaign. "I have always ruled out Buffon, as Dida is a great goalkeeper and has just signed a new contract with us."
