Benitez bows down to Milan

Rafa Benitez’s men had the luck of the draw in Istanbul and claims fortune turned on Liverpool this time around.

"We played really well in the first half but conceded a goal through bad luck," he said after the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Milan. "We were pushing and left a space and they have the quality to make the difference. We were trying to keep the ball but you need to take the chances."

The Spanish tactician conceded that Carlo Ancelotti’s men were worthy winners on the night in Athens. "We lost against a good team with top-class players," he said.

Defender Jamie Carragher was left kicking himself after Andrea Pirlo’s free kick struck Pippo Inzaghi to open the scoring just before half-time. "I think the best team won," he said. "It was pretty even in the first half, but to give away a goal just before half-time was a killer blow. I was in two minds as whether to control it or clear it, but I should have done better."
