Serie A Wk 16: Rescheduled Match

Wednesday 24 January
Catania 2-1 Empoli
A magnificent volley from Giuseppe Mascara boosted Catania's hopes of European qualification as they secured their first win of the new year against Empoli on Wednesday evening. This game was postponed due to heavy rainfall in Sicily on December 17, 2006. Mascara struck just after the hour mark at the Stadio Angelo Massimino to ensure the Giallorossi leapfrogged their opponents into fourth place in Serie A. After a goalless opening 45 minutes, the game sprung into life early in the second half with all three goals scored in the space of nine minutes. Fabio Caserta gave the home side the lead seven minutes after the break, but their lead was short lived with Antonio Busce drawing Empoli level only two minutes later. But it was Mascara who proved to be the match winner and his spectacular scissor kick ensured Pasquale Marino's side secured all three points and put the disappointment of suffering consecutive defeats prior to the game behind them.
