It has been announced today that the Italian Primavera youth team Championship will be renamed after deceased Inter President Giacinto Facchetti.
“We have decided to change the name of the competition to honour the memory of Facchetti’s great sporting figure,” said Lega Calcio chief Antonio Matarrese. “I personally made this proposal and all the members accepted without any complaints. [Inter owner and new President] Massimo Moratti was visibly moved by this fact,” added the official.
The championship will now therefore be known officially as the Primavera TIM Giacinto Facchetti.
Facchetti, who died in September, was firmly convinced of the ethical importance of youth teams, which he did not consider only from a technical and competitive point of view. This was confirmed during Inter’s board of directors meeting on Monday, when newly-elected President Moratti announced that the Interello youth training facility would be renamed after Facchetti.
