Olimpico to host 2009 European Final

Rome's Stadio Olimpico has been selected to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2009 by UEFA's Executive Committee today.

The arena was one of the favourites for this honour and was built to host the 1960 Olympic Games. The attendance was expanded to 80,000 for the 1990 World Cup and now hosts the home games for both Roma and Lazio.

A statement on UEFA's website said: "The committee decided after assessing criteria such as stadium capacity, safety and security, access, transport, supporters' facilities and commercial potential."

The Olimpico has already hosted the Italia '90 World Cup Final between West Germany and Argentina, plus three European Cup Finals in 1977, ’84 and ’96.

Meanwhile, the 2008 Champions League Final will be hosted by the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The UEFA Cup Final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium in 2008 and the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul in 2009.
