CL: Roma & Milan win but Inter beaten

Tuesday 12 September
Group B - Matchday 1
Sporting Lisbon sprang the surprise of the night, as Marco Caneira scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Scudetto holders Internazionale. Caneira's beautiful strike flew past keeper Francesco Toldo, while Patrick Vieira was sent off in the second half on his Champions League debut for Inter.

Bayern Munich found it easier against Spartak Moscow, scoring four second half goals to win 4-0. The German champions toiled in the first half, but Claudio Pizarro's individual effort shortly after the break settled their nerves. Roque Santa Cruz, Bastian Schweinsteiger with a beauty and Hasan Salihamidzic netted further goals to seal a comfortable win.

Group D - Matchday 1
Roma are top of Group D after a 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Stadio Olimpico, but it wasn't quite as straightforward as the scoreline suggests. The teams were locked together at 0-0 until Rodrigo Taddei opened the scoring on 66 minutes. Then Francesco Totti's wonderful finish and goals from Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro completed a comfortable-looking win.

In the other game, Fernando Morientes scored a hat-trick for Valencia as the Spanish side won 4-2 away at Olympiacos. Michalis Konstantinou put Olympiacos ahead in the 28th minute, but Morientes scored in the 34th and 39th minute to put the Spanish side ahead. Olympiacos levelled on 65 minutes through Nery Castillo, but Raul Albiol's 85th-minute drive restored Valencia's lead before Morientes' last-minute header sealed the win.
