[UCL] Samp play-off with Werder

Sampdoria must overcome Werder Bremen if they are to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage following the draw for the play-off round in Nyon.

Unseeded under UEFA's League Route qualifying format, Sampdoria avoided being paired with the likes of Sevilla, Zenit St Petersburg, Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax.

Domenico Di Carlo's side will travel to Bremen for the first leg on August 17/18, before hosting the crucial return in Genoa on August 24/25.

The Blucerchiati will join Serie A champions Inter, Roma and AC Milan in the group stage if they can overcome their German Bundesliga opponents over the two legs.

Elsewhere in the League Route section of the play-off draw, Luciano Spalletti's Zenit and Auxerre go head-to-head, Young Boys welcome Tottenham, Braga host Sevilla in an all-Iberian meeting and Ajax travel to Dynamo Kiev.

There are also five group stage places for the other half of the draw. The Champions Route paired Salzburg against Hapoel Tel-Aviv, Rosenborg take on Copenhagen, Basel welcome Sheriff, Zilina travel to Sparta Prague and Partizan Belgrade meet Anderlecht.

The ten losing teams will automatically drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage.
