Mauro Camoranesi returned to training today for the first time since injuring his knee as Italy held their opening practice session just hours after arriving in South Africa.
AC Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo, who has a calf strain, was unable to make it on to the pitch at Southdowns College, just south of Pretoria.
Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio did only some light running up and down the touchline while the rest of the squad warmed up together.
Then Camoranesi, who was hurt on 1 June, was taken away from the group to test out his left knee in a series of turns and shots.
Coach Marcello Lippi will be holding his first press conference on South African soil at the Casa Azzurri headquarters, based at the nearby Cornwall Hill College, shortly.
The reigning world champions are in Group F with Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia. They open their campaign on 14 June against the South Americans.
